New Dialing Procedure Affects Security Providers in the Greater Austin Area

Posted By Jeaneen Bengtson, Wednesday, September 12, 2012

The telecommunications industry will be implementing an 'area code overlay' that affects alarm providers in the Austin, Texas area.

The current 512 area code covers the greater Austin area and principally in Bastrop, Burnet, Caldwell, Hays, Lampasas, Milam, Travis and Williamson counties. To ensure a continuous supply of telephone numbers to residents and businesses within the 512 area, a new  737 area code will be added. This change also requires locals to use a new dialing procedure--area code followed by the telephone number.

Residents may begin using the new dialing procedure on Dec. 1, 2012. The dialing procedure will become mandatory on June 1, 2013. As a result of the overlay, alarm providers located in the 512 area code must reprogram all alarm units that do not currently use a nine-digit telephone number by the mandatory date.
