Area Code Overlay May Affect Security Companies in Northern California

Posted By Jeaneen Bengtson, Tuesday, September 18, 2012

Security companies that provide service to customers in Northern California may be affected by the new area code overlay.

To ensure a continuing supply of telephone numbers, the 669 area code will be added to the area served by 408. The new 669 area code will serve customers in the same geographic region as the current 408 area code.

As a result of the overlay, a new dialing procedure requires callers to dial 1 + area code + telephone number. This means that all calls in the 408 area code that are currently dialed with seven digits will need to be dialed using 1 + area code + telephone number. Alarm and security services and equipment currently located in the 408 area code and programmed to dial only seven digits must be updated or reprogrammed to accommodate the new dialing procedure for all calls in the 408/669 area code.

All alarm equipment must be reprogrammed by Oct. 20, 2012. To test reprogrammed equipment, please use the test number 669-669-1669. The test number will remain active through Jan. 20, 2013.

For more information, please visit the California Public Utilities Commission website.
