SIAC warns of local government trend - - The Security Industry Alarm Coalition exists to advocate for the electronic security and life safety industry at the local government level. On any given day, SIAC will respond to dozens of potentially damaging and business altering proposals, but the most onerous proposals are those that would force alarm companies to pay the fines for the false alarms caused by their customers!
In Chico, California the city actually passed an ordinance that did just that! It took the intervention of the California Alarm Association, SIAC and a coalition of impacted companies to hire the attorneys and get the decision by the city council reversed. Fining alarm companies is becoming a topic of conversation in more and more communities, as many learn that “no response” and “verified response” policies create citizen back lash that make those policies untenable.
Another trend is using the alarm companies to collect registration fees and fines for customers. Imagine the implications of that type of local policy, if you will. One can only imagine the administrative burden, logistical issues involving different AHJ collection requirements and all the other issues that come to mind by such policies.
But make no mistake, these two examples are not the only threats on the horizon, and they could be coming to a community you serve soon. That is why supporting SIAC is so important. SIAC has no members. It exists completely from donations received from members and chapters who recognize the intrinsic value that SIAC delivers, day in and day out.
We encourage all chapters and individual members to contribute what they can to keep SIAC out there, quietly representing you and keeping threats to your business at bay.
