SB336 Legislative Update From LLSSA
On May 22nd, the Senate Commerce Committee considered SB336, which alters the definition of certain contractors, including electrical contractors, which affects the electronic security and life safety industry. An added phrase in the current definition of an electrical contractor could result in repercussions as they relate to license and permit capabilites. SB336 has been deferred but will remain on the radar of LLSSA.

LLSSA 2nd Annual Dealer Conference
The Second Annual Dealer Conference for the Louisiana Life Safety and Security Association will be held June 16th at the Paragon Casino Resort in Marksville, LA. Pierce County Sheriff’s Department Receives National Recognition for Excellence
The Pierce County Sherriff’s Department is being honored for their excellence in alarm management by the Security Industry Alarm Coalition. Pierce County has successfully reduced false alarm dispatches, implemented best practices, and displayed a serious commitment to the community they protect. FLSA Overtime Rule Update
The United States Department of Labor has announced its’ final ruling on the Fair Labor Standards Act overtime issue. Louisiana Becomes First State to Make Targeting Officers a Hate Crime
With little resistance, Louisiana has now included law enforcement and firefighters among the groups protected by hate crime laws. On May 27th, Governor John Edwards made Louisiana the first state to make targeting first responders a hate crime, a title typically reserved for traits of race, gender, religion, etc. Read more about the penalties, critics, and supporters of this new legislation here.
